History
Veteran fair of East Tennessee

In 2022, a visionary alliance of academics, community organizations, and local leaders recognized a pressing need for enhanced collaboration among entities serving veterans. United by a shared passion, they convened to delve into the multifaceted challenges confronting veterans, their organizations, and the communities they call home. Identifying pivotal factors affecting local veterans and their access to crucial services, this dynamic coalition forged a three-part mission to effect transformative change:

1. To inform local veterans of the opportunities and service organizations available.

2. To foster community between veteran service organizations.

3. To encourage greater community engagement with veterans: be it educational, social, or support.

This bold mission set the stage for a groundbreaking initiative that would become the Veteran fair of East Tennessee in March 2023. What transpired was nothing short of extraordinary. With over 200 representatives from 70+ veteran service organizations, the fair emerged as the unrivaled beacon of support in the region. Connecting over 500 local veterans with a myriad of services, peer support groups, and life-changing education and employment opportunities, it swiftly became a pivotal force for positive change.

The unparalleled success of this endeavor can be attributed to the unwavering commitment of the project committee. Determined not to let this be just another run-of-the-mill veteran fair, they went above and beyond. In addition to the essential support services offered by Veterans Affairs, they actively sought out vibrant veteran peer groups centered around diverse aspects of veteran life, from the arts and sports to recreation. Recognizing that resilience thrives in a connected community, they ensured inclusivity, reaching out to groups supporting military families alongside veterans.

Crucially, the committee worked tirelessly to guarantee that the impact of the fair extended far beyond its initial event. Meticulously crafting a floor plan that strategically placed complementary organizations in close proximity, they facilitated meaningful introductions during the fair. Information panels were designed to address key issues in the veteran community, bringing together individuals from different organizations to share insights and strategies.

In the aftermath of the fair, the region witnessed a surge in collaborations between organizations, fostering a spirit of unity and shared purpose. This transformative event also catalyzed the creation of organizations to address specific needs that had previously been overlooked, such as the empowering Women Veterans of East Tennessee. The legacy of the Veteran fair endures as a testament to the extraordinary power of collaboration and community-driven initiatives.

Over the ensuing year, the event committee fervently explored avenues to elevate their success, amplifying services and opportunities within the veteran community while broadening their reach. A cadre of visionary members crafted an audacious blueprint for a national spectacle, a grand stage amplifying the talents of veteran artists and musicians alongside an array of indispensable service organizations. This extraordinary event would resonate with the soulful beats of veteran musicians, the captivating tales of storytellers, and the riveting performances of talented individuals across multiple stages. It was poised to transcend mere festivity, evolving into an unabashed celebration of veteran culture.

Inspired by this vision, a bold new mission emerged:

1. Facilitate dynamic networking between veterans, veteran focused organizations, and their communities.

2. Heighten awareness of the myriad of opportunities available to veterans.

3. Reinforce bonds with the civilian community through music and the arts.

Appalachian Veteran Fair

The resounding success of the Eat Tennessee Veteran fair guaranteed its annual return. While steadfast in its commitment to spotlighting veteran service organizations, the inaugural event revealed a startling truth: the demand for veteran-focused service events far surpassed initial estimations. Witnessing this unmet need, the indomitable efforts of Goodwill of Tenneva and the Warriors Canvas paved the way for an unprecedented alliance with the iconic Bristol Motor Speedway, who graciously opened its gates to host future fairs.

This event would continue to focus on veteran service organizations, however since it now served people outside of East Tennessee it would begin its new incarnation as the Appalachian Veteran fair, transcending the borders of East Tennessee to embrace the entirety of the Appalachian region in their continuing mission to serve the veterans of the region.
